SESSION OVERVIEW: Production errors are inevitable, but what if your systems could detect, debug, and even fix issues autonomously? In this talk, I’ll share our experience creating a proof of concept AI-powered agent designed to monitor live system logs, identify errors in real-time, debug the underlying causes, and proactively generate pull requests to fix the issues. I’ll explore how we built this automated solution, discuss the challenges faced, the lessons learned and explore what the future holds.

Enough with the hype: On building and operating a useful Data Warehouse

The modern data landscape is filled with noise. From BigQuery and Redshift to Databricks and Snowflake, the hype is deafening, with vendors promising the moon on a stick. Yet, many organizations find themselves enthralled by the technology but struggling to extract real, tangible value.
John will be discussing the day to day practicalities of running and operating a modern data warehouse.
We will move beyond the buzzwords to explore simple, but effective, strategies for success that are applicable to any platform. We’ll focus on understanding the core concepts that power these systems without getting lost in the technical weeds, and gain practical advice for building, operating, and most importantly delivering business value from your data warehouse.
This talk will deliver insights for practitioners who build these systems, but also give advice for those looking to improve the data capability of their organisation.

99 Second Talks

Take the opportunity to take centre stage and introduce yourself to the group! Talk about your business, your career or a topic that interests you – just keep it to 99 seconds.

If you would like to speak during the evening, approach our team anytime in the lead up to the talks and we will add you to the list!

SESSION OVERVIEW: The human brain has an amazing ability to spot patterns in random data. It’s an evolutionary legacy that enabled us to survive. and a power that can help teams look at problems through new lenses and find ways to solve problems that would otherwise remain undiscovered.

In this workshop, participants will be led through some of the theories behind apophenia and then get to try out a few techniques that can help unblock creative thinking in teams at any stage of developing software products.

The first part of this workshop will provide participants with a crash course in the theory behind apophenia.

From there, participants will get to try out three distinct techniques:

– visual metaphor – to help explore new perspectives
– “The Creativator” – for idea generation
– tarot for business – how the mechanics of tarot card reading can be brought into an organisational context to help tell stories and solve problems from new perspectives.

SESSION OVERVIEW: In a world of more AI and automation, human connection and empathy is more important than ever. Learn how to tap into and grow your empathy in this talk.

We think of empathy as an innate human trait, and humans are (generally) wired for it, but that doesn’t mean we can’t develop and practice this skill. I’d argue this is something we should be doing.

This talk will cover what empathy is, how we display and use it, and why it helps use have deeper, more productive conversations. It will also include some concrete tips on how to practice your empathy in every day life, as well as some tips on how empathy can help you increase your self awareness and kindness towards yourself.

I’ll be bringing research and tips I’ve learned on my journey to be a therapist, bringing examples in a safe and engaging way.

Digital & Social inclusion

At MTF we believe that everyone across Greater Manchester should be able to access a career in tech without barriers. That’s why, as part of our digital and social inclusion programme, we collect food bank donations at our events. We then work with Manchester City Council and our charity partners who distribute the donations to those who need them most.

We appreciate times are hard for everyone, but if you can, we politely ask you to bring a donation for our food bank partners. We are asking for baby food, nappies, infant formula, hygiene wipes, tampons, sanitary pads, halal food and socks. If your religion prevents you from touching or purchasing any of the previous items you are welcome to bring packaged bars of soap.

I’ve never seen a conference with such a high level of visible diversity and inclusion, and I’ve never seem so many delegates that were positively BUZZING from all of the inspirational talks and stories. What a brilliant, brilliant day.

Thank you to all the organisers, I can’t wait for next year!

So many ‘WIT’ events focus on how women need to lean in. They are all focused on how women need to change. My biggest takeaway from today is that we need to talk more about changing the system. Not about changing women in under-represented groups. Honestly the best conference I’ve been to for a long time.

The unfiltered requirement did not miss. Each speaker brought their authentic selves to that stage and very moving stories. Thank you all for your honesty and openness. Thank you for the most inclusive agenda I’ve seen.

You understood that representation would matter, and rose to the challenge!
