Tech conferences are exhilarating—but let’s be honest—they can also be a lot.
The buzzing energy, constant movement, and endless schedule can be overwhelming. If you’re someone who gets easily stressed, distracted, or overloaded by sensory input, this guide is for you. Here’s how to make it through the day without burning out.
Managing Noise and Crowds
Large events are sensory-rich environments, which is exciting for some but overwhelming for others. Here’s how to create your calm:
- Quiet Zones & Mental Health Spaces: Step away from the noise whenever you need to recharge. Victoria Baths has a dedicate mental health space and our other venues have quiet breakout zones all highlighted on the map
- Earplugs or noise-canceling headphones: Sometimes tuning the world out is the best way to focus. Don’t forget to bring these with you and don’t worry about using them!
- Plan your seats: Sitting towards the end of an isle or at the back of a talk can make it easier for you to leave first – leaving the crowds behind you. Alternatively planning to sit at the front can allow you to time to let people filter out before you make your exit!
Plan Ahead!
Conferences move fast. Talks overlap, workshops run on tight schedules, and it’s easy to lose track of what you want to see. For this, the Manchester Tech App can be a lifesaver! By logging on now you can:
- Book talks into your personal schedule: So you only need to focus on one clear agenda for the day instead of scanning across multiple rooms of content
- Set alerts so you don’t miss a session: Enabling push notifications on your event app can allow you to receive alerts for when key sessions are starting!
As well as planning what you want to see, you can also familiarise yourself with the environment with our sensory maps. Understanding what to expect in each area can really help with getting through the day!
Remembering the details
With over 8 talks each day as well as all of the conversations you’ll have – it can be easy for details to slip your mind. A simple way to make the most of the day is to take notes as you go:
Use the event app: There’s a dedicated notes section where you can quickly jot down key points, ideas, or questions during a talk.
Bring a notebook or digital device: Some people prefer handwriting, others typing—choose whatever feels natural.
Focus on the essentials: Capture the main takeaways rather than trying to write everything down. Even short bullet points can help you remember the most important insights.
Catch up afterward: If your mind drifts or you miss something, recorded talks are available to review later. You don’t have to rely on memory alone.
